New CD Sweet Memories...never leave by Erynn Marshall & Carl Jones now available!

Posted by Carl Jones on Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Happy Spring to everyone in the mandolin world.  As the ground is thawing and my fingers and brain follows suit (I hope!) just wanted to tell you that Erynn Marshall and I have a new recording this new year. We have just gotten back to the states after a lovely trek around Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. We played the Gainsborough Old Time Festival and saw many great musicians and friends. I'm happy to say the mandolin is going strong in  the U.K. ---I had over twenty folks roll in for a workshop one afternoon much to my pleasant surprise.  I even had a nice talk with Jackie Daly in Killarney between all his many adamantly delivered jokes(accordion player extraordinaire) about sessions in Ireland and why there were so few mandolins seen. He pointed out the simple fact that they just don't have the volume to match up to the tenor banjo, pipes, and fiddle. Of course the mandolin does shine best in a setting where they can be heard and not physically overplayed trying to be heard.

Anyway, I hope you all get across the pond someday and we'll meet in the Corner Bar in Cork where Mick Daly and his buddies play dandy tunes and songs weekly. Thanks Mick!!!  But I am a bit off track...oh yes!! speaking of tracks...

The New CD that Erynn and I have just released is called Sweet Memories...never leave and has a nice variety of old and new tunes and songs.

We're really excited and happy with the new recording and hope you like the tunes and songs too! Here's the tracks we recorded:

1. Poor Little Ellen - Obray Ramsey inspired our take on this classic murder ballad.
2. Camp Chase - The tune said to free Sol Carpenter from the prison camp after a fiddle contest. This version comes from West Virginia fiddler, Wilson Douglas.
3. One Fond Adieu - A wistful song Carl wrote the night before his 60th birthday.
4. Piney Woods - Burl Hammons is the source for this beautiful West Virginia tune.
5. Rocky Point - A Marshall original for Lois Carnell of Hinton, Alberta.
6. Convict and the Rose - An old Blue Sky Boys duet.
7. Daredevil Blues - Erynn composed this tune for her thrill-seeking brother Rob.
8. Jack Rabbit Jump - This hopped out of Carl’s mandolin after watching rabbits leap.
9. Maple on the Hill - A sweet song popularlized by Wade Mainer and Mainers Mountaineers in the 30’s. Our inspiration was the Callahan brothers.
10. Turkey Gobbler - Such a fine tune from Kentucky fiddler Buddy Thomas
11. Rambling Gambler - Heartbreak and Gambling often go together.
Carl’s has always loved this Dixon Brothers Classic.
12. The Lohman Waltz - for Kurt and Jodi Lohman of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Enjoy! Erynn and Carl
