It's been a while, and I've been neglecting my mandolin. I haven't stopped playing music, but I'm focusing more on fiddle since I have to memorize two tunes for a concert. Now, I've been playing fiddle since mid-April. And I'm set to on on stage in December to play a solo waltz. And I was picked to be part of the group to play the state song. There's some preparation going for that. And the fall semester started, hopefully the last fall semester of my master's degree. So my mandolin sits in it's case, waiting for me to do more than check the humidifier. I had all intentions of going to a jam session last Sunday...all the best intentions. But a friend called me up and wanted to go hiking. And I sure am a sucker for good-looking scenery. So no jam, no mando. And now I've got a banjo on the way. So my only course of action is to go way back to making a weekly chore chart for my instruments.

Ohhhh don't call it a "chore chart"! Call it getting to what you love doing. What sorta banjo did you get? Learning clawhammer on my wooden top banjo and working on Scottish Carols.

I got myself a Recording King Dirty Thirties banjo. New line, and a good instrument for a beginner picker. So I'm going for the bluegrass style of picking. Clawhammer is pretty neat, one of my friends plays both bluegrass (Scruggs) and clawhammer. Both styles are pleasing to listen to. How long have you been playing banjo?

A "dirty thirties"? Gotta see a pic of that. Well- I originally purchased a used banjo in the early 90's when my life was pretty hectic (I hadn't learned to set perameters yet) And I never got to play it...but kept it in a storage unit thru many moves. Finally, last year I got it out of storage, replaced the tuners and started learning bluegrass, but am switching to clawhammer as I like the sound better. Clawgrass also interests me. I have two more banjos now,a wooden topped one (my openback) and a vintage Aria resonator that I also love. (Aria has a tone ring!)
