I've been attending a small jam session on Sundays for the past month, first few weeks with my fiddle. Last two times with my mandolin. I've been hesitant to join in with larger jams, mostly because I'm quite new and am still trying to figure out what's what. But I was invited to one of the larger jams that takes place right after the usual one. So I decided to just go for it. And I'm glad I did, although I realize I've got to make a lot of progress with chords if I want to keep playing back-up. In total I was playing for 4 hours, not bad for only my second time with a mandolin in public. Next week I'll stay later...and will hopefully have 4 new chords to add to my list.
It's been pretty fun so far, and people are generally impressed with what I've done in a short amount of time and having never played a string instrument before 2 months ago, and having never played mandolin until about 2 weeks ago. Hopefully by the end of summer I'll be able to actually pick tunes and not just chords. All in good time. I've got an intense week of mandolin workshops in July, so hopefully that will get me moving fast in the right direction.

I left a comment on my blog related to your question on mandolin materials for learning songs, etc.
