So not knowing much, I took my new Loar to a jam session on Sunday. I don't know about learning things by ear, I'm still figuring that out. But what I can do is watch someone and follow what that person does. So I managed to get through Old Joe Clark on back-up by watching the other mandolin picker. Yes, it was just chords. But that was the first tune in back-up I've ever played, and I literally just learned some basic chords on Saturday. What I got after was, "Nice mandolin playing there." Everyone there knows I'm just starting out on both mandolin and fiddle. It was great to hear something positive. Very encouraging. Now if I could figure out the whole "played in the key of" and learning by ear, I think things could be even better.
