Favorite Song To Play

Posted by willie shepherd on Saturday, March 19, 2011

I make it  a point everyday to spend time in my music room playing one of my instruments, and without a doubt the mandolin is my choice, and I was just wondering when you sit down to practice what is the first song (or your favorite song) to start out with?Everyone has a song that they just really enjoy pickin'.I just wanted to get some ideals what they are. My favorite song to start out with is {Jerusalem Ridge} Bill Monroe style, for some reason this song just seems to get me going.

Hey, Willie, it's always changing for me, but currently I'm picking up fiddle and putting some Scottish bowings to " Whiskey before Breakfast" and "Shady Grove." On mando, however, I'm enjoying "Fire on the Mountain" and "The Foggy Dew" and "Greensleeves" in Dm. I used to play "jerusalem Ridge" all the time on fiddle, but no one around here plays it, so I'm quite rusty. Great tune though.

These are some great songs.I really enjoy playing fiddle tunes on my mandolin. It seems to get attention at open jams.

Hi Willie. These days I'm trying to get comfortable with "St. Anne's Reel" on mandolin (I keep messing up the ending of the A part). I'm also working on "Liberty". They go along with my clawhammer banjo versions. Maybe some day I can get up at the jam, start on mandolin, and switch to banjo in the middle of the tune. Maybe.

Well, being a beginner I have started with what i know and have sung and played on the banjo: FOUR STRONG WINDS.

Hi Willie, my favorites are the classic fiddle tunes: Old Joe Clark (which is coming along nicely, thank you), Cripple Creek (aka "special needs creek"), Wildwood Flower (which I just can't get to sound right) and Arkansas Traveler. Another one I picked up which is real fun is Pete Seeger's Little Boxes.
Peaceful Pickin to ya!

When I play I always start out playing Sally Goodin. It's a great tune that can get pretty challenging and you can play it at different tempos.

I never know what to start with so I usually start playing nonsense, scales and such. Then I think of what to play and right now it's usually Gold rush because I've been working on that one lately.
