Got the ebook this morning. It'll take a bit of time to get into, there's lots of detail.

Thanks Rob.

I ordered your eBook via Mandolin Cafe, and have setup my mandolin using your instructions... I just say it was perfect for me, easy to read & follow.
Many thanks Rob.

Thanks for the e-book mate.
I downloaded, printed (in glorious colour) and put it in a binder :)
I haven't started the setup yet. Am waiting for a couple of tool that I ordered on eBay

Thanks for putting such a great resource out there

I have received and read your book and must say it is about the most detailed book I have seen. You could give a person a mando and this book and they could set it up with no prior experience. Wish I had it 45 yrs ago when I started building and repairing instruments. A GREAT BOOK. Thanks for sending it. Bob

Thanks for the e-book on setting up a mandolin. It's straight to the point and easy to understand instructions (as well as recommended set-up numbers) is a great help. I hope more people who struggle with not-set-up instruments take the time to make their playing enjoyable.

Great information in robster's book. I'm rereading it now, as soon as i get the few tools needed I'm gonna see what i can do with my el Cheapo© mandolin.

Thanks Rob,
I've started looking through your book and I already see a lot of good adjustments I can make to improve the sound of my new beginner mandolin Ibenez 510E. Though I've played on and off for over thirty years it has been the horrible action on my Hofner 1962 that has kept me from playing more.

I recently bought the same mandolin as seen in Rob's YouTube videos. Im digging it. Thanks in advance Rob.

Rob!!!...

Over the top!

After receiving your ebook I went to work on my newly acquired, previously owned Kentuky km700.

It had never been set up, so I fit the bridge, filed the nut slots and gave it a good polishing and it's playing like butter.

Thank you for sharing this great information with us.

Thanks Rob...I also got your e-book through Mandolin Cafe (last fall) and have since set up 3 mandolins, which all turned out perfectly thanks to you...I will never be afraid to work on another of my instruments again...The last one was a Rouge that I ordered for 59.00...It is now one of my favorites because I don't have to get it out, or put it away...It can hang on a Mic stand hanger right by my computer (really handy)...

I also found another trick on line....Stack some feeler gages whose total height equals the height of the first fret + 11 thousandths for the A & E strings and 13 thousandths for the G & D strings, then file the slots until you reach the feeler gages....You can do it with just one try this way...

Thanks again Rob for all the research you have done, and for sharing it with us...You have made perfect results possible for " even beginners "...

Looking forward to receiving robster's ebook on mandolin setup!

Robster's e-book is a gem and should be mandatory reading for anyone planning to do anything (including strings) to a mandolin.  Many thanks to robster for his generosity!

JE_Feltner - Posted - 04/30/2014:  18:59:50

I received robs eBook last night. today I set my mandolin up by his procedure and had a small rattle on the G string. it was an easy fix, I had to raise the bridge 0.020" and it did the job. over all a good setup book and the product is a easy playing mandolin with good tone. the only thing I wish it had in it would be information about leveling the frets. but I reckon that's out of the depth of this book. I highly recommend this for someone who doesn't have prior knowledge of mandolin setup.

thanks for the information rob

Sir....Thank you for the ebook on setup. I will read it later as I have only 2 mandolins, both set up by professionals. To all you other good folk, you might think of making a small donation to Mando  Hang Out. Consider the time and expense you save with this ebook!

mrnatch - Posted - 06/24/2014:  09:35:46

Thanks much for the ebook. First task will be finding equivalent things over here. No such thing as the "blue" tape, and feeler gauges will be metric. Always did love doing that math. But once over the initial humps, which by now I've come to expect, I can see this will be a great resource that will help me get the best from the instrument I've got.

I spent about three hours this evening setting mine up according to this book. All I can say is it's amazing! I sure wish I had of made a before and after video. This book put everything in plain old understandable English. Not only is the action on mine outstanding now but the intonation set up was so easy I don't know why it didn't occur to me to do it that way to begin with. I recommend this book to any newbie idiot like me, and as a guitar player for years I reckon even veteran players could use it! I can't say thanks enough for this book, Rob. I can cancel my setup appointment for Saturday, now. Thanks again!

Robster, Thanks for the e-book. Great resource with all the right information to set up a mandolin. I can already see my bridge needs a little fitting as a paper slides in a bit on either side of the bridge. Intonation looks pretty good, thanks again.

Rob,

I haven't had a chance to read all of the e-book yet as I just got it today. Just by looking through it, I think it will have allot of useful information. I'm in the process of building my 7th and 8th mandolins and will be using your information to aid in setting them up as well as checking out my other mandolins.

Thanks again for the e-book and my very best to you and yours.

The ebook from Rob just landed in my inbox here in Scotland.

I had initially intended to browse the first couple of pages and then study it in more detail at a later time.

2 hours and a couple of cups of tea later I had read the whole thing in a 'one-er', I couldn't put it down!

Rob has a great style and ensures the fundementals are explained well and then overlaid with the detail.  It proved a great read, very helpful and informative.

Maybe Rob could do a follow up on basic music theory for the mandolin!?

A great job Rob, thanks a million!

Regards,  Terry

this is a terrific resource.  Everyone should have a copy.  I just received my first ever mandolin - Kentucky KM-150 from Elderly.  All the specs out of the box were pretty much bang on as Rob describes.  I did a slight adjustment on the bridge and the intonation, and it sounds sweet. thanks to Rob.

Rob,
Just received you E-book on setting up the mandolin. There is so much great stuff in there.
I can't wait to try it out on my ole cheap left handed Cozart "F" model.
This should be given to mandolin players when they buy their first set of strings.
Even if you don't try it, it is great info on how your mando should sound or why it doesn't.
Thanks,

Rob, thank you in advance for sending your ebook my direction. I appreciate all the work you've put into it.

Thanks again and best regards,

Hiya Rob, many thanks for the book, it's a really great guide.
The shared vids are also great - before and after - I was really worried that I'd got a duff mando for my other harf, but it sounds just like your before vid. He's been trawling the book, new strings arrived today so he'll get started soon.
Many thanks again

I have just received Rob Meldrums's free e-book on Mandolin Set-Up.  What a GREAT resource!!  I'm fairly new to mandolin(2 years) and the information adds greatly to my knowledge and enjoyment of the instrument.  Thank you Rob!!

Thank you very much for your ebook. Just gave it a review and it is very complete. Many things or concepts I have read before in the internet are starting to come out but with a more precise knowledge.
Much appreciated.

Rob, Thanks for forwarding the e-book. It is a great resource. Another possible tool for anyone adjusting nut slots on a budget is a set of welding tip cleaners. They work well for the wound strings if you are patient. Just match the diameter of the string and file away. About $4 at Home Depot.

Hello Rob,
Just sent you an email asking for your eBook. Your before setup video sounds just like my mandolin now. Looking forward to having a mandolin that doesn't sound like I'm murdering geese. Thank you!

Fantastic instructional!  Thanks so much Rob.  I know how to tear apart a guitar. I'm a newby to mandolin and wanted to see if there was anything beyond basic guitar setup technique needed for the mandolin. I actually learned a few tricks that I can use when I set up my guitars.

Thanks Again!

Bump for this awesome resource Rob has generously supplied the community. I'm new to the mandolin world and it is incredible that Rob is so willing to share this much knowledge and expertise out of an excitement and passion for the community. Thanks, Rob! It's been almost exactly 3 years since Rob first posted this offer and he is still responding to requests for the ebook - absolutely awesome.

Many thanks,

Brian
