The question about best Christmas presents for mandolin players caused me to reflect on a bottle of lemon beeswax oil that has lasted me years mainly because I have used it on my guitar so infrequently. There are combinations other than lemon beeswax that sound interesting, e.g. walnut beeswax oil, coconut beeswax oil, and home-made variations. Besides being a possible gift, do you wax your mandolin, sometimes, seldom, or never? Amazon and Google show a variety of products.

I guess it would depend on what type of finish is on the mandolin as to what you might use to protect and shine up your mandolin. Nitro celluous lacquer is probably the most common on most factory made instruments. I used to use stuff called "Guardsman" which is, I believe, the exact same thing as Martin polish only in a much larger bottle at a fraction of the price but I haven't seen it at the grocery store in a while so I use Martin's Guitar polish. Cleaning, I use Naphtha then polish. I think the main thing you need to watch out for is that what ever you use that it doesn't contain silicone. Silicone is bad stuff for musical instruments. You can't get it to go away and will sabotage repairs and refinishing if you ever have to do that.
