An old leather belt cut to length works fine for me. It'll never wear out.

I made my "strap" out of a special macrame cording. Works just fine and didn't cost anything - had it hanging around from a project I had done a few years ago. I tried a leather strap but it was too thick to fit under the strings of my Kentucky 250 A. I'll get something else, eventually.

Hey all,
just a quick note to give you a headsup of what we believe will become the ULTIMATE mandolin strap. For years we have offered our standard round and flat 4 braid straps. In our continuing effort to create the finest strap available, we are going to introduce our five braid "herringbone" mando strap. This great strap will feature a heavyweight bison leather tail section. This is the same leather that we use for our banjo, guitar & dobro straps as well as our non braided mando straps> The herringbone pattern is an unbelievable tight braid and the braids and loop will feature our ultra luxurious elk leather. Be on the lookout as we hope to have them available around the middle of April 2013. As always, thank you for your continued support.

I recently picked up a nice Breedlove KF natural and needed a strap.  I took your advice and used a dog leash we used to use with Rusty our Siberian Husky (RIP).  I cut the latch end off and ran a bootlace through the small hoop for the peghead end.  A leather punch from Hobby Lobby and a utility knife took care of the other end.  Now I have a solid strap and I can remember my favorite dog.

Made this one this mornin' from a left-over leather boot lace an' a draw string stopper that I had picked up a year ago to add to a boonie hat.

Got a square knot at the endpin an' it all seems to be workin' out pretty well for me. smiley
