Oh looks as though I am the first one here.
Just popped over from the Banjo Hangout to take a peek... I have a mando but I don't really get much time to play it as I spend most of my time on the 5 String.. Hopefully this new site will help encourage me to graduate over to the mandolin.

Tam, I too started out on banjo and graduated to mandolin just over 3 years ago. I love the mandolin (and fiddle) and it's versitility. You can still read tab and play, or by ear. It's a melody instrument, but I'm finding out it's alot more than that. Don't stop playing banjo though. I did for a while, but I'm now going back to it and making time to play all my instruments and loving it. Good luck to you.

Thanks I am a total beginner when it comes to the Mandolin. I started out with Murphy Henry's Beginning Mandolin DVD, I can just about manage to play a G scale so I have some way to go.
Hopefully the MHO will develop into as great a resource as the BHO has become for Banjo Players.

Ditto. New here- obviously the sites newly up (and a nice surprise on Christmas Eve), but gotta love how the mando is capable to naturally fit into so many genres of music.

Like Zeb, I'm a banjo player who picked up the mando last Summer, why I needed to torture myself with trying to learn another instrument is beyond me! But, I really enjoy it, and hope to get better on it. If I don't, it won't be for a want of a better instrument, I have some really nice ones, mandolins that outpace my meager abilities to be sure. I actually could say the same thing about my banjos! Anyhow, it's great to see the new site, and I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful Christmas 2010.

Glad to see the BHO folks showing up over here. I don't feel like such a new newby when I'm in familiar company.
I'm working on the fiddle and mandolin at the same time--a few years behind the banjo. I have a guitar so all I need is a bass---then I'll be the whole band!!!

Never got into the banjo, I've been a guitar player all my life. I recently picked up the violin and I fool around with a cello. After the violin, the mandolin seemed like a natural progression because the tuning and fingering are the same. I received a Stagg M-50E acoustic-electric mandolin for Christmas and I absolutely love it.

I'm currently working on Old Time fiddle and banjo at the same time , playing mando for about 3 years and have been playing guitar for over 40 years...Love the crowd at both FHO and BHO and am sure this will ramp up nicely as well......

Another BanjoHangout (and FiddleHangout/FlatpickerHangout) member here. I've played around with a relative's mandolin, but that's about it. One of these days, after I've "mastered" the banjo, maybe I'll try to do more with the mandolin. In the meantime I'll look forward to reading all about it here.

I've been picking for 40 some years now. I'll NEVER "master" any instrument I pick. I made the mistake (when first starting out) of trying to learn a lot instruments all at once. I spent so much time trying to :"learn them all", that I never learned any of them adequately. However - - - the "upside" to that was, I could pick a bit on all of them in a jam session. I got to be better on some instead of "all the others".

I started on the violin actually. Bought my first mandolin in 1979 and have been practicing it and playing it ever since. I play mainly bluegrass, celtic and Klezmer on it, but also teach a mandolin orchestra. We are working on Mozart and Vivaldi now!

Then I got into mandolins.
I mean, I really got into mandolins.
Now most of my tunes are played on a mandolin of one kind or another.
Even played my Octave Mandolin like a lute for madrigal dinners the last couple of Christmas seasons.
When you find the right mandolin(s), the one(s) you really connect with, the one(s) with THE sound, it becomes very hard to put the mandolin(s) down.
