Got my first ever mandolin today and have some questions:
I will probably be playing blues on it mainly, but would like to do an occasional jazz classic as well.
Hence my wonder whether or not I should go for
- standard tuning or
- open G? or
- both, by re-tuning?
side info - I can read music and am a harmonica player originally.
The only blues players I know are the late Johnny Young and the late Yank Rachel (saw him live once...)
It might be a good idea to get a beginner instruction book and learn the basics first and the worry about tunings.
To begin with, I'd leave it in standard tuning and get used to making chords and finding where melody notes are.
