There are a lot of songs I want to play and most of them are played on banjo, and I struggle to find tabs for mandolin. For a beginner like me is there a tool of some kind to transfer or create those tabs for mandolin or would I just have learn to play by ear?

Thank you,

- oldnmoldy

Have you been to mandolincafe.com? It has over 1,000 mandolin tabs. Go here: mandolincafe.com/tabarc.html

If you can't find what you want in tab form then you need to work on being able to pick out the melody to a song you want to learn. If you get the key, the chords and the melody down, then it's fairly easy to add additional frills and make it sound like you want it to. Sounds easy, but it took me a long time to learn to play by ear. Lots of woodshedding, lots of trial and error, lots of going to jams and making mistakes and trying again and again.

Barron Collins Hill has tabs on his site here.  If you do a search on mandolin tabs you will find many more sites.

A little late, but I have a lot of tabs for fiddle tunes on my site too

My weekly posts have detailed breakdowns which include sheet music (both standard notation and tabs) for vocal songs and fiddle tunes - mattcbruno.com/weekly-posts/

I have sheet music for about 36 fiddle tunes on this page mattcbruno.com/bluegrass-jam-c...d-lyrics/ - just select "fiddle tune" as the type to see those.
