Yep, his advice from years ago got me certainly wiser, stated upgrading with a 1923 Gibson A2,, which i got repaired by Mike Vanden later. Then bought my first Vanden F5 and a snakehead A. Now i still have a specially built F5 to my liking, and played it for almost 40 years.
His Banjo book is very thorough. I studied it and the DVD from Steve Huber in preparation for a neck reset on a Mastertone. The owner had me use Siminhoff Straight Up Strings for it. He thinks I worked some magic with his banjo. I merely followed the instructions. When I finally get around to attempting a F5 I will start by getting The Ultimate Bluegrass Mandolin Construction Manual. I will try the Straight Up Strings for mandolin right away.
The Chisels Are Calling documentary about John Monteleone has some fantastic Mandolin content.
