I've been on mando hangout since 2011 and I only started playing mandolin about Sep last year. This is when I borrowed an Epiphone mandolin and an old tutorial from a friend and started slowly but surely. The tutorial is a well renowned one with a floppy disc that wasn't in pitch. I became bored just playing with the metronome and realised I needed a new impetus.
Then Xmas came upon us with my birthday shortly following and with the usual generosity of my family enquiring what gifts I would like, I responded that I would like a cash gift because I would like to buy a my own mandolin and a modern tutorial.
I quickly ordered Jay Buckey's Vol. 1 & 2 bluegrass virtual band tutorial with CD's.
Then after careful consideration ie communicating with you guys on this forum about what makes a good mandolin, the cash gifts and extra money I needed to add, I bit the bullet and ordered an Kentucky 855.
Now I've built the calluses on my fretting fingers I'm really enjoying my home practice and as some would say "my mandolin journey has begun".
I now look forward to building my knowledge and repertoire in order to gain the confidence to be able to attended a slow jam that is about 40 miles from where I live.

I've been learning and play Scruggs style banjo since 2006. Been a member of a couple of bands, the current one for the last year. Really love playing bluegrass so thought I would give the mandolin a try.
