Hey folks,

I just just got asked a question that comes up from time to time.

The fellow asked what the 'B' and the 'R' mean.

You'll only see them at the tops or bottoms of chord strums.

The "B" stands for 'Brush Stroke', which is a relatively quick strum (or 'chop' as in bluegrass)…

The "R" stands for 'Raked Arpeggio', which is a 'slower, dragged out strum'...

You may have noticed that the 'B' is usually used on an 1/8th note 'chop' and I usually reserve the 'R' for 1/4 note strums.

1/8th notes are 1/2 the time length of a 1/4 note, therefore the 1/8th note 'B' is a quick 'chop' and the 1/4 note 'R' is a slower strum...

Hope this helps...
