My nutty neighbor gave me his mandolin (frankly it looks fantastic and is in perfect shape) (never asked for it) but alas he gave it to me. (i guess he assumed i liked bluegrass). Should I even bother with it since I had a sour experience with banjo? (and frankly other musical instruments like piano, and trumpet). ( i tried to tell him i did not need it but he is kinda lonely so i could not push back too hard).

Give it a try, have fun, don't judge yourself harshly for trying...
If it turns out not to be your thing, un-used mandolins make great fly swatters in the summertime!
They make good canoe paddles also...
