Hi. I’m just getting into mandolin and I can’t seem to find an explanation of the difference between like an F5 and an F7 mandolin. Is it size?

Google on "Gibson mandolin history" and you should get a wealth of information.

The F4 and other scroll or Florentine style Gibsons had oval holes and the neck joint was at the 12th fret of the fretboard. Lloyd Loar joined Gibson as an acoustic designer in 1922. He redesigned Gibson's top models. The then new F5 incorporated f-holes instead of the oval and while the 13.875" scale length was retained the bridge was shifted more toward the middle of the top resulting in the neck joining the body at the 15th fret, giving players more room to play up the neck. That is the quick and simple explanation. So the oval hole models are called short-neck models and the F5 is called a long-neck.

The F7 was a later product developments with lower quality appointments than either the prior F4 or F5. They have f-holes but the older short-neck layout.

Google is your friend. There are many finepoints which distinguish all the Gibson models.

Hope that helps.
