So, I accidentally bought a Washburn M-4s-ts on eBae last night for $350 and free shipping. Pretty sure it's an '81 based on the SN, but the original bill of sales says 1983. It's a purdy ax with nicely figured woods all around, and comes with all of the trimmings (original pick guard, tail piece, HSC, what not).
Anyways, just curious if anyone on here has played these Japanese-era Washburn F models and what you think. I've been looking for a backup to play on stage while I get my other mando into the shop for some long overdue TLC.
I had seen similar models from that era sell for around $800, so I figured it couldn't be that bad of an instrument. I also figured my offer of $350 was going to be rejected, but it was immediately accepted. So now I have a new vintage instrument on the way. Oldest instrument I've had since I traded my old 1930's Kalamazoo flat top.

Well …. the Japanese crafted instruments were well made from the late 70's on. I expect you will find it passable for a second instrument. The Alvarez, Kentucky and Ibanez instruments I have played from that period were what I rate as acceptable plus … more than OK but less than great. The Sumi workshop put out instruments at the top of that curve. When most production moved to Korea …. not so much ….now we have solid workmanship and materials instruments coming out of China.
