I haven't visited Mando Hangout for a lo-o-ng time. I mostly play fiddle nowadays, but still play the mandolin some. I don't really know what's been talked about here lately, but I see it's very quiet, not many posts at all, even compared to Fiddle Hangout which isn't exactly on fire all the time. Two mandolin techniques still interest me, even though I have been playing for many years. The first one is executing triplets, especially downward, but upward too. Good players sound effortless putting them in amongst runs of 8th notes. I do okay with that but it's not a strong point. I'd like to hear any rules of thumb for triplets.

I'm also interested what people have to say these days about good tremelo. Mine is pretty comfortable, but I do it with a sense of 3s rather than 4s. I vaguely remember there was some controversy with someone here last time I brought this up, but my point then, as now, is if you're having trouble with it, playing tremelo in 3 can open it up for you. It's a real thing, and it seems a lot of players get stuck trying to get a comfortable tremelo.

P.S I've been doing transcriptions of fiddle tunes and posting them on the web for the past few years. Quite a bit of Kenny Baker, lots of old time and whatever else I feel like.

Jethro Burns was the king of high speed triplets going in any direction and in any key...

Ken Eidson transcribed at least 2 books on Jethro though Mel Bay...

I studied his style profusely 30 year ago and still my Jethro books up until recently...

I'd see if I could find those Jethro books used on Amazon and see if they answer your questions or whet your whistle for amazingly hot Jethro solos...

Thanks. I think I actually have a Jethro Burns book somewhere that someone gave me long ago. Time to dig it out.

Hey, thanks to a Fiddle Hangout friend! I'll check it out. By the way I got my LP of the Bobby Osborne album with Kenny Baker on fiddle and it's really good. Kenny Baker is smooth as butter, and Bobby's mandolin playing is is remarkable. I guess I'd never listened that closely to his mando chops before. I think you ordered a copy too?

Mine showed up yesterday. I will get a chance to listen to it tomorrow. R/
