After looking at violin/fiddle bridges over many years (solid wood, no metal) and then banjo bridges (solid wood, no metal) also, I began to wonder WHY would anyone want to put 'metal' posts with metal adjustment screws in mandolin bridges.
It's like an Oreo cookie where the chocolate top and bottom are WOOD, but the creamy innard is METAL...
If metal, especially screw metal, is not known for its sound properties, why would you want to interrupt a wood-to-wood process with metal?
Years ago, I took a hand made mandolin that I owned and loosened the strings.
I pulled the 'standard issue' mandolin bridge off of it.
I took the metal screw posts and thumb screw adjustment wheels out and replaced them with a shim of hard wood to take up the space where the metal wheels had been.
I glued the top, bottom and now wooden middle shim together to get stability, let them dry and then put the newly 're-built' bridge on the mandolin and tightened up the strings...
I noticed a definite difference.
Mandolin bridges need adjusting so infrequently, I can only wonder why anyone would ever have thought that adding cheap metal would do anything but hinder the sound performance of the mandolin and bridge in question.
I went online looking for solid wood mandolin bridges but came up with nothing...
Anyone know a good mando bridge builder?
Example of a solid wood (no metal) bridge:
