I have been playing the mandocello in our orchestra and am wondering if anybody else here plays?

I've never played one myself, but I had the good fortune to see the Modern Mandolin Quartet in St. Louis many years ago.
At the time, the Quartet featured Chris Thile.
There was another gentleman there, whose name slips my mind at this moment that played mandocello in the quartet...
It seems to be the equivalent of the bass, within the mandolin family...

I play one, as does my son. Inquiring minds want to know ... what type of mandocello do you play?
We aren't playing classical music on them though, just Americana/Roots/Folk music. Mandocello provides a different voice to the customary arrangements of traditional folk tunes I play. I fills the space between normal guitar and bass nicely. And it is an unexpected sound. There are a few examples of the mandocello in pop and rock music. I remember hearing one on a Little Feat recording (played by Fred Tackett) and it surprised me a lot. I had to have one.
I've never been in the position to purchase a proper mandocello. The vintage ones are rare and worth a king's ransome. Ovation offered one a decade or so ago. The rock band Cheap Trick put them to good use in a song or two. The recent Gold Tone mandocello model sold out before it was off the boat, or so it seemed. Missed out on that. The Eastmans look good but are still beyond my budget. So I convert six string guitars to mandocellos by re-working the peghead for the additional tuning pegs, replacing the nut, doing the same for the bridge saddle and finally adding an eight string tailpiece. Hey, it works!
