I've started following the lessons on the Banjo Ben website, as I'm already a member. I can play the melodies, no problem, but occasionally he throws in a triplet which consists of a strike, followed by a hammer on, followed by a pull-off. On banjo this wouldn't be an issue -- my Hatfield has more than enough sustain to carry the changes in pitch and the single string pull-off is, literally, a snap. But on the mandolin I can't get enough volume out of the hammer-on; the decay is too quick. The pull-off doesn't happen at all. I perform the action, but there's no sound. So what I end up with is a note, followed by a barely audible ghost note, followed by nothing at all. Help!!

Jethro Burn used to pepper his solos with such triplets...

He had very low action according to him on some recording that accompanied books sold through Mel Bay in the mid-1980s...

I was just able to execute a 2-4-2-0 triplet pull-off on the 2nd (A) string...

It wears hard on the tip of my left-hand index finger...

But, I did it...

I recorded a sample of me playing it, but it was in MP4a format and this site wouldn't allow me to upload it, so I can't provide proof that it worked...

But it did...

It IS, indeed, rough on your 'banjo' fingers!

You can do it with practice...

A little at a time...

Remember "Thomas the Train"?

"I think I can, I think I can..."
