I posted this a while back, but here goes.  Any other octave mandolin players here?

I have a Trinity College.  I tune it down a whole step and then capo the second fret.  Been picking out "Saint Anne's Reel" and "Road to Lisdoonvara"  and "Pride of the Springfield Road," and so on.  Fun.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Curt! I now (along with mandolin), play tenor guitar... two are tuned GDAE (octave below mandolin), and one tuned CGDA (mandola/standard tenor guitar tuning) as well. That's interesting, about tuning your Octave like that. I can see how that would work and be loads of fun!

Using the capo on the second fret allows me that shorter reach, makes it easier to pick the tunes.

I have a octave that I converted from a student size guitar. It is a 22" scale length and is a joy to play. I had read somewhere that it is hard to make a bad sounding octave mandolin and this project proves that. It sounded terrible as a guitar, but as it is now it has a very sweet, mellow tone. I quickly found out that you can't really play it the same way that you would play a mandolin. So I found myself writing some tunes, something I had never done before. It sure is fun to play.

Larry, would you post some of your tunes?  I enjoy hearing what other people create; in fact, it often gives me ideas.  Thanks,

I also have a TC octave mandolin.  I tune mine GDAD and sometimes use a capo.  Mine is a first generation Trinity College, with the fleur de lis on the headstock.  I got it before the turn of the century.  My wife bought it when she witnessed me almost buying a very cheap Greek bouzouki.
