The subject probably reads like "what"? But I'm looking for feedback on which way to go as a newbie.
I messed around with mandolin a couple of times in the past but ended up gravitating to banjo, old time style, clawhammer. I still have a desire to learn and play the mandolin.
So the question is, what do folks think about going straight for a quality instrument (used) or starting with a more beginner package like the Kentucky 150.
My experience with banjo is that I went through about a dozen different makers before I settled on one, ok two. Not sure if I should avoid the cost and headaches of buying and selling to get there with mandolin? Thoughts appreciated, thanks.

Buy the best instrument you can afford. Keeping in mind that you may need to set it up once you have purchased it. Those eight , short , strings need to be adjusted for height and neck relief or a mandolin gets physically difficult to play in a big hurry. You may buy one an love it and you may not. But starting with a quality instrument is my choice of the way to go..... R/
