Hi,

I just wandered over here from the Banjo hangout with a question......

My boy has played guitar for years, but has just picked up the mandolin.  So, I am looking for a book for him to learn with.  He knows music, fingering, tabs, etc. pretty good because of his guitar experience, so I didn't want to get him anything too basic.

Any thoughts or similar experience?  Or are there any books out there similar to the Earl Scruggs book I learned with?

Thanks!

Jack Tottle's Bluegrass Mandolin from Oak Pub. is a good one.

I got Eddie Collin's mandolin book and it got me started fairly quickly.   He gets you started on fiddle tunes pretty quickly. There are literally dozens of beginner books to look at.  Go to melbay.com and check out some of their beginning mandolin books.   Might find something that is just perfect for your son.

Once you get used to picking 2 strings at once (which was very difficult for me), then you can start picking out melodies to vocals and work on them.  That's what got me started (without using a book except for fingering chords).  If your son plays guitar, he probably just needs to noodle around and see what he can do.

Mandolessons.com

This is a free website and covers everything from the very basics to the expert level of playing. Each lesson is a video and encouraging learning by ear but you can download tab and notation for each lesson if needed.

Many people have had success (and fun) with this book nativeground.com/product/blueg...k-cd-set/

Thanks!

Thanks for the ideas! I'll check them out. He doesn't really want anything too basic because of his extensive guitar background, but I'll check out the ones you have listed.
