How do I hold an italian (bowl) mandolin

Basically, the same way you'd hold any mandolin. The bowl rests nicely in your lap while you're sitting. You can also play it without a strap while standing, using pressure to keep it on your body, like a ukelele. I have a strap on mine for standing, but use arm pressure to keep it in place. I really don't play it too much, because I have other mandolins with flatter backs and better tone, but it's nice to take off the wall now and then and play.

I made this video to help explain how I hold the mandolin.

Get a square of felt about 7-8" on a side to put between your shirt and the instrument.  The friction will help hold it in place
