I'm a new mandolin player with a Kentucky 150. I need to fly to Canada, want to take a mandolin and I've read numerous posts on the subject. I will be on a DASH8-400 and then on an Airbus A320. I worry a little about the size of the overhead compartment on the DSah8.  One thought is to acquire a hard case for the Kentucky, try and take it on as "carry-on" and if that doesn't work, do a "gate check" and if that doesn't work let the airline check the case. Another option is to buy an inexpensive mando on Amazon (Rogue RM-100A $60 or Kansas K-MA1B $65) put it in my Gator soft/foam case and try the same thing....carry it on or, worst case, let the airline take it at the gate or check it. My Gator case is 30" long which is 6-9" longer than the airlines "allow". I read where so many people just carry the case right on with no issues. Some are offered the opportunity to put it in coat storage up front. I dont fly often and may not fly again so the cheap instrument may be the right idea for me. Any thoughts out there? Thanks......Jim

I'd get a hard shell case for it and carry it on the airplane.  If there's not enough room overhead, I'd ask one of the stewardesses to put it in the storage area up front.  I wouldn't even consider taking any instrument on a plane in a gig bag.
