I bought some instruments from an estate last weekend, which included a couple of nice-sounding mandolins that were made by Bernie Kearns of Coalport, PA. He died in 2010 at the age of 84, and one of the mandolins is labeled #12, so I suspect that he may have made more than just a couple of instruments.
Has anyone heard of Bernie Kearns ? Here's an F-3 style mandolin made by him:

I don't know shell very well. It may be abalone, but it's not the highly distressed material from the center of the shell.
