Sitting here with the morning coffee, trying to get motivated to cut the grass, and after that it's work on a couple instruments (tuning, new strings, etc.).  

Was down at the local GC yesterday.  An hour ir so in the acoustic room messing around with everything there and kibitzing with the other two folk there makes for a pleasant tume.

Will be shipping off my Eastman MD504 tomorrow. Trading it for a Loprinzi ukulele. Will be tuning it CGDA after I get it - like keeping the other stringed stuff in 5ths as it keeps it simple for me.

Well, my Eastman is history.  Still have my Redline Traveler, Burgess and an old Fender.  

Have done some more experimenting in mandolin-equivalent instruments for travel, leave-in-the-car and other such uses.  Ukuleles offered the best potential and have worked out fairly well.  The other day picked up a new concert-size (15" scale") ukulele at local GC for $50. Changed the strings to tune it at CGDA which worked okay, but sounded a little deep.  So, I dropped the C string. shifted the GDA over one tune line, added an E string using 20-pound test monofilament fishing line, and it's not bad at all.  The tuned strings match in pitch to my mandolins.  No, it doesn't sound like a Gilchrist or Gibson, but is pleasant enough to finger-strum or pick with the nylon strings.  For $50 as an experiment,  I'll call it a success.

Why did you ship the Eastman mandolin is it no good I know two old boy's that play the fire out of them they say love them there are MD504 I was looking at getting one some day your M.O friend Jimmy

Yes, it's quiet here indeed.... time to start using this place again.
I haven't played the mando for a looong time now. I've mainly played the guitar and the concertina. But there's a bluegrass festival coming up in August so I'd better get going. I'll take the guitar too but will likely play the mandolin most of the time.

 Hi Susi! Yep it is too quiet- it's also sadly quiet in the group we belong to...."Calicos with mandos" I posted a bit there. What bluegrass tunes will you be working on for the festival? I love the mandolin for the portability,and now I have a travel size banjo as well. (made in USA too!) Pickin some gospel tunes and things like "Cluck Ol Hen".

The Eastman MD504 is indeed a darned good instrument.  The problem is not having enough hands/fingers to play everything.  I still have my two favorites (RedLine Traveler and a Burgess, both flattops).  Would rather see the mandolin getting played than gathering dust, and I wanted to try a really good concert ukukele.
