Hi Goldman.

As I understand it, the best time to start learning mandolin is ten years ago, and today! Go for it!

Welcome to the hangout. :-)

Welcome.

These mandolins can become an obsession before you realize it.  A few sessions with them is more addictive than ----------. They also have a tendency to multiply before you know it.

Send her to a spa---your treat after a night out with the girls maybe. While she's in the spa go pick up your new mandolin. "But Honey it's an investment........"      I have a friend that is a famous handbag designer/owner and a gazillionaire because of it. Every so often he'll hand one off to me to give to my wife and I'll stash it until the correct moment. "Hey I got you a new Sak, oh and check out this cool thing I got!" The trick is, you get something, they get something.  The other technique is to convince her that what your doing is part of some business model your working on. When the business never really happens ---well, you know, start up businesses often don't get off the ground. The bottom fell out of the midlevel vintage instrument business and doubt that it will ever return--- so my business model did fail --so it goes. If I had the cash maybe I could play in the highend but there is a bit of a mafia going on there and it's not easy to play with the big boys.   I have had the disease bad in the past and I still have a bunch of instruments stuck in closets and corners -some for restoration some just because but I have turned  a new leaf in the last couple of years. I have a couple of mandolins(oval and F) and a couple of guitars (big one ,small one) that are as good as it gets or at least as good as I deserve,or maybe more so, and the end result of decades of hunting + a fender tele and a mandocaster a Mesa amp so what else do I need? I have a piano sitting there and a set of drums -- what I need is TIME --these are set up and ready to go with fresh strings and most likely in tune when I pick them up and I'd rather spend any available time to play playing. The others just become a distraction .
