I bought my first mandolin a few days ago and already I'm noticing that the edge of the mandolin bites into my right forearm, even through two layers of clothing. I just picked up a strap and started using it, hoping that would help but it's just the same. This can't just be my unique problem. How have others dealt with this?

How are you holding your mandolin? Of course there are going to be differing opinions but one of the best ways to hold the mandolin is with your right arm coming over the tailpiece on the end of the instrument, horizontal to the ground, not the top edge. It's the best position for playing in my opinion. Problem there is old style stamped tailpieces have sharp corners. If that's what you have you might have to upgrade to a different tailpiece.

That helps. I was holding the neck pretty high. Holding as you recommend, with the strings pretty close to horizontal, eases the bite into my arm and also reduces the contact between the corner of the bridge and the base of my right thumb. Thank you for the response.

Much like the chin rest you'll find on a fiddle, there are also various types of arm rests you can install on your mandolin to alleviate the problem.
If you search on ebay, they also have one available for about $25.

An alternative to an arm rest is a 6" wrist sweatband, I use one made by under armor, they sell for
around 8 bucks a pair.
