Hi

I'm playing in a duo/trio set-up, where I play Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo and occasionally Dobro.

In a live situation this is a bit of a hazzle. My Guitar is amplified through an AER-60 line-out connected to the PA; and that works absolutely fine. The others I play through an on-stage SM57 plucked into a mixer and then onwards to the PA, but that doesn't work very well since i have to adjust both volume and EQ on the mixer to get a decent sound.

Switching from the guitar to any of the others also is an issue, since i have to take the volume on the amp to zero and crank up the volume for the SM57

I'm looking for a good solution for this (apart from hiring a sound engineer). I have contemplated foot-switches like the Lehle 3@1 SGoS or Palmer Trinity, but that doesn't solve the EQ issue.

I wonder if anyone out there have come across a good solution for this

I see that nobody has answered, and I only have minimal experience with this, but I suggest buying a small mixer such as a Behringer or Yamaha where you can set the EQ and volume for each channel and run your guitar through one channel and the SM57 through another channel. That way you can have each set up exactly how you want, leave the main PA amp alone when switching instruments and do it all right beside you with a minimal amount of fuss.

Interestingly Im in exactly the same position as you, except the banjo (at present!),

I had pick ups on each instrument through a Behringer mixer then into the PA. I got fed up with all the cables so decided to go with just one SM57  straight to the PA.

I find I can live with not having the option of tweaking the PA and its been OK so far.

Cheers, Mike

Hi guys

Thanks for replys.

I have talked to a bunch of people and it seems that there are many ways to skin a cat.

My most recent suggestion, although i haven't tried it yet, is to install decent pick-ups on the mandolin (Fishman probably) and the banjo (AKG C411), the dobro i haven't decided yet.

All will be run through a DI-box (Palmer PAN03 Pass) into the mixer and onwards to the PA.

This will give me individual EQ on all instruments (yeah) but i still need to adjust the faders upon switching, but i think i can live with that.

If this works i am contemplating adding an on-stage AKG condenser mic to give the final touch on the solos.

I'll let you know how it evolves.
