OK, here it is. New thread for all things Mando and anything else. Just post a number or 2 and let's see where it goes. I saw this on another site and it's been going on now for several years. It's fun and it helps with counting OCD...
All discussions are welcome, let's just keep it friendly...

So here's how it works, say something, talk about stuff and leave a number or 2 or 3 in order.
Has anyone seen anything good on Austin City Limits lately?

Welcome TSSN. I've been using my Christmas present! I got Apple Logic Express DAW software for the Mac. It's so involved and has SOOO many features I had to purchase a book to help me learn how to use it. It really is a nice tool and can produce some high quality recording. I've been using a MXL Condensor Studio mic, and it really reproduce the mandolin sound well. Acustic guitar sounds nice, add in some bass and I'm learning how to use Midi for keyboards and the built in Ultrabeat drum sequencer. All in all, it's a really nice package.
Neko Case uh? If I remember she did a nice cover of a Tom Waits song a while back? Do you know which one it was?

Restrung my Girlfriends Harmony A yesterday. Took FOREVER to set the bridge. Does anyone know if there is a suggested temperature/humidity level recomened for set-up of a Mandolin?

I'll have a look at the liner notes on my Neko albums.
Sweet sounding software set up. I need to get back to simply futzing around with Audacity...

BTW, just got a copy of The Steep Canyon Rangers with Steve Martin-Rare Burd Alert. Good Record. Mike Guggino is a pretty good Mandolin player. You should check them out if you haven't already. I've seen them live several times without Steve Martin. They are excellent pickers!

I don't really get what this is,but then there is nothing unusual in that.
I'm in New York for a few days, Saw Steve Earle last night. He played his Gil some. Will do my pilgrimage to Mandolin Bros. and Retrofret I hope.I like to stop in to Matt Uminoff's when I come to town. Not really buying but I do like to look. The Soho club I went to last night --"City Winery" is a good club. A little pricey maybe ---Grisman coming in March.
"33" to you Rolling Rock fans.

Ha! Welcome Ben! You got Trumped on your 33. This thread doesn't have to make sense. It's just a place to hang out and chat about all things Mandolin and Music. And do a little counting which helps with tension and stress at work and apeases my OCD a bit! Anyway, welcome and please stop by anytime!
I've never seen Grisman live. Would LOve too...
That's OK TSSN, first round is ALLWAYS on the house!

Nice mandolin boy. You just can't beat a good pick. I got a Blue Chip CT55 for Christmas last year and I Love it. I have literally used it everyday for over a year now and it still has an edge. Essentially no wear at all. They are expensive, but I have not bought another pick in over year. If you can keep up with it and not lose it, they will save you $ in the long run.

I don't think I've ever worn out a pick. I've lost them before that happens so I don't see how a $35 pick will ever save you money. I do use a Bluechip and it is a superior pick and I guard it with my life. If someone wants to try it they can but I want collateral--like their car keys. Anything that costs money but actually really does improve playing is probably worth it but it's not a case of "Buy now and save!"
I went to NY and all I got was this T Shirt..It says "Retro Fret". Worth a pilgrimage...a few nice mandolins, some instruments you will never see anywhere ever again and lots and lots of very cool guitars. Some instruments that only exist as legends that you can pick up play and discover why they are legends. You need an Indian Tracker to find the place and then there is no sign when you get there to let you know your not lost, just a little thing on a doorbell that says "Retro Fret" and you still have to cross a roof to get there..

That's cool Ben. Sounds like an awesome place. About the picks, maybe I was just using the wrong kind to begin with, but I had a couple of mandolin pick a friend gave me, not sure the brand, but they would wear down to almost a complete circle. I tried guitar picks, Starr picks, Dunlop, Fender, everything I could get my hands on locally. They all wore out after a month or so of heavy playing. Anyway, I Love my Blue Chip and I guess it was worth the money, besides, it was a gift anyway. And I literally have not bought a pick in over a year. Maybe just knowing it was $35 has given me incentive to NOT lose it!

Mandolin Ant you should keep using picks then wear them until they are perfectly round and then sell them. There are mandolin players that swear by round picks. I have never seen them for sale and I myself once made a holder so I could lathe a round pick on my drill press starting with a big triangle shaped pick that I could buy. I eventually settled on Dunlop Ultex picks and I still think they are a great pick. The Bluechips are the easiest to grip and since I am losing my grip (in every way one can lose their grip) it works best for me.
NYC has lots of cool stuff and is always worth a trip. It's a long way for me as I am on the left coast but I do like to go there sometimes. Played a couple of Kimbles at Retro Fret --man can Wil Kimble build a beautiful mandolin. They were made about a year apart both great and both quite different from each other.

Perhaps he has more than one mandolin for sale and he sent pictures of the wrong one. Write him back and ask why. It's possible it was an honest mistake.

I have GHS Silk & Steel strings on my Big Muddy. The tone is a lot brighter now, but not tin-ny. I like them, but I'm due for a change, and haven't decided whether to stay the course or try something else...

I don't know about woodier, but SLICK and Steel would probably be more slippery.
Seriously, though, I used GHS Silk and Steel for years and, yes, they have a more dry tone and less sustain. I really loved them. I started using flatwound strings about 15 years ago, but used Silk and Steel for at least 10 years before that. They're not expensive so I'd give them a try. Leave 'em on for a couple of weeks to get an honest evaluation.
