From what information I have gathered, including talking to Geoff Stelling, there are not as whole lot of these out there. I picked up one at Elderly about 3 weeks ago. It had multi-colored abalone inlays rather than pearl, a skunk stripe down the back of the neck and 3 guys signed the label...Geoff Stelling, Zack Deming and George (Jiri) Lebeda. I'm wondering if anyone else has one of these 34 Stelling mandolins, mine's S.N.31...and just who is Zack Deming? Was/Is he a Stelling employee or what??? Of the three gentleman that signed my label, does anyone know who built what part(s) and exactly was resonsible for doing what to it?

As far as the mandoln itself, the thing is a sonic cannon. It does everyting I want a mando to do and it does so comfortably. This is contrary to what I was told, that the overseas Stellings are not as good. The fit and finish is second to none, even the inside of the body and headstock scrolls are finished, whereas alot of mandolins I see, they don't take things that far..who's gonna look for finish that far around the curve fo the body scroll I guess is their reasoning. I played it last nite with a weekly group of 12-15 people whamming their instruments, all trying to be heard. I don't have to play the thing hard at all to be heard...it's nice to have amandolin you can hear when you are behind it... I've had it 19 days, and it continues to open up. Whoever owned it first did not play it much, there was absolutely no fret wear.  Lastly, the few Stelling mandos I've seen, none had a skunk stripe down the back of the neck, if you have one of these fine mandolins, and/or more knowledge than I do, please chime in and educate me.

I have a friend who owns a couple of Stelling mandolins.  Easy to play, easy to fret, great sound (like the Stelling banjos and gutiars).  I can't remember if it had a stripe on the back or not, but it was a pretty mandolin and made me wish I could afford one.
