Looking at purchasing one of these on line. The 614 retails for about $200 more. Is the price difference due simply to the extra cost of the scroll work? Is the quality, volume, tone comparable?

First off, one's a oval hole and one's an f hole. This will make a difference in sound. Maybe you meant the 615? Anyway, I would say the difference in price may be the scroll. But, to answer your question, a 615 and a 805 would both be a quality instrument IMO. I would say pretty equal. (again, IMO)
To see which is "better" you'd have to go and play them. I own a Eastman 515. The shop I bought it from had two 515's and a 615 and a few others. I almost bought the 615, but after playing those particular three Eastman's I found that one of the 515s sounded "better" to me then the other two, and in fact, better then a few mandolins that were a lot higher in price. (it's subjective, granted.)
Don't get me wrong, they were all good instruments, but if you compare two of the same model and make, one of them will sound/play whatever, better then the other to you. Never mind two different models.

Setup makes a big difference.
MD805D is a discontinued model. More of a zing in the sound.
MD614 has the oval hole sustain and tone.
MD615 has a typical F mandolin tone.
