or a loar lm700?
was also looking at eastman and morgan monroe

You should have no problem finding a quality mandolin in that price range. The Kentucky's and Loar's in that range are very good. I would probably stay away from Morgan Monroe. I can't speak for all of them certainly, but every one I have played has been junk, especially in sound. From what I've seen, they make a lot of pretty looking mandolins that sound very thin and cheap. I'm sure there will be people that disagree, but the general opinions here and on Mandolin Cafe are not good. Keep your eyes on the classified ads here and on MC. I see mid-level Eastman's and Loar's all the time in your price range. Be patient. On MC right now there are quite a few high-dollar mandolins for sale, but it goes in waves. At some point you'll find a whole bunch of affordable ones.

"The Loar" LM-600 or LM-500 - get properly set and with a Cumberland bridge.
Eastman MD-605 - excellent. Just sold my last one yesterday, the clear winner among a wide range of Loar and Eastman.
