Hi all,

I'm a newcomer too with the same questions ajhayes has:  mandohangout.com/topic/22256

I have a "the Loar 520" from Janet Davis Music.  I don't really know how good it sounds because this is my first try with mandos.  It sounds okay but how is it against more expensive mandos?  

So, if I were to upgrade to a $1,000 to $1,500 range what would you recommend?  Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond, it is appreciated.

In that price range there isn't a great deal of choice for an American made mandolin. I would suggest that you look for an A style as opposed to an F as your likely to get more for your money. You could also consider going used and maybe you can find a Collings MT or a Weber or Gibson A9 in your budget. I 'd check out the other guys(Mandolin Cafe) classifieds because there are possibly several hundred mandolins offered there. If you buy used and on line insist on a grace period so that you can check out or have checked out anything that you might purchase. Right now it seems that you can easily find a vintage A model Gibson on ebay for under $1500 or even under $1000. It helps to know a little bit about them before you go that route but basically from an A-0 to an A-4 there isn't that much difference in their playability.They are old and may need some attention after you get one--everyone should have at least one.

Also, check out the Breedlove A models. I have a Breedlove OF and it is a terrific mandolin. I see them used regularly for $700-$900. It's hard to find a better built or better sounding mandolin in that price range. I bought mine for $975, but I just saw one a few days ago on Craigslist for $700 with a hardshell Breedlove case.

The Bluegrass made by Glen Dean Cecil in Charleston. They are $2000.
