I am getting a 2006 eastman MD 514 with hardshell case for $500. Is that a good deal? it's been setup with flatwound srings, and a new fitted bridge.

I had an 814 many moons ago. I traded it away.
I think that may be one of my biggest regrets as I still remember it well and would really have to think to remember which instrument I traded it for...

If I recall correctly, a "1" in the middle indicates an F model and a "0" indicates an A model.
I am very happy with my 605 Eastman and if I ever saw a 514 for $500, I'd snatch it up without a second thought.

Yessir, you are correct: The 1 in the middle = F styled, and the 0 in the middle = A styled. To add to that, a 4 at the end = Oval hole and a 5 = ff holes.
The 814 is no longer made... ANOTHER reason I kick myself for trading it away! It was a first year of that style.
Matrix certainly got the deal of the day!

Never heard of "flatwound" strings for a mandolin. Those are usually reserved for jazz guitar.

D'Addario and a couple of other brands of "flat" strings available - really are milled down round wound.
