Since Dan posted one last week, I thought I'd do one to see if we could continue.
The last two dances I played our fiddler & mandolinist played this as the final waltz. I have yet to work out what I should do on the banjo while they are playing, so I just listened. Well, maybe that [b[is[/b] what I should do!
I'm just a novice on the mandolin, but I sure have fun curling up with it in an easy chair. So I messed around with working out this tune. I've attached my version here, down below the images. I'm playing my late 1930s Kay Kraft.
This lovely waltz was composed by Robin Dransfield, I'm not sure when. It was included on Barry Dransfield's 1984 album Bowin' and Scrapin', which is available on itunes I believe. The tune is also currently available on a CD by the group Queen's Gambit on CDbaby. Notation and MIDI are available on thesession.org and on volume 7 of the Lewes Favorites tune list.
So, why is it called "Metal Man?" If you search for "metal man" you get alot of hits that are quite definitely NOT associated with this tune. But there is meaning to the name. Robin Dransfield chose the title in honor of a famous lighthouse which is in the shape of a man who is directing ships in to Oyster Bay, Sligo, Ireland.
