I am thinking of buying the dvd set from homespun. I was wondering what the people who have gotten them thought of the dvds

I think Sam has a couple of different ones, the Monroe explication and another set on rhythm and chops.

I have 3 of Sam's Homespun DVD sets.

* "Mandolin Method" - Excellent
* "All About Lead Mandolin" - Very good
* "All About Rhythm Mandolin" - Good

IMO the first in my list above is the best. Clearest breakdowns, best tune selection.

The "Lead" DVD is also very good.

Be aware that all are primarily tune tutors with some technique instruction. Theory is not really the focus.

Sam is a good teacher. I don't regret buying any of them.

I've got one that has several great players on it, including Sam Bush and Ronnie McCoury, and Chris Thile. I think it's called Great Mandolin Lessons. It's not bad. There are like 9 or 10 different lessons on it. Sam Bush does a great seg on rhythm and chops.

I have the one where Sam explains Bill Monroe's technique and I didn't like it. At least for me I thought Sam went to fast and I found it hard to follow

I have that one as well. I agree he went WAY too fast, but I did pick up some good licks here and there.

I have the Monroe DVD also and I also agree that it moves a bit fast and he assumes a lot. But I guess you have to teach at a chosen level and maintain it throughout. I also got a lot of licks from it and still refer to it now and then. I like Sam and it's just fun to watch!
