Is there anyone else who plays or is trying to play the mandocello?
If you do, what kind of music do you play?
And, yes, I play mandocello.

Nice 'cello!!
No, I do not own one, but I like retuning my guitar's lower four strings to fifths, and playing Bach Cello Suites.
Which is not entirely the same, but it gives me that deep tone.

wow! that thing in a monster! I would not know where to start. I do not play but am curious to learn more about it -tuning, type of music that would suite it, etc...
...speaking of mandocello, I just saw this one!

My mandocello is tuned the same as a cello.
I plan to post a couple of audio recordings I made today so people can hear the sound of it behind other instruments.

Here's a fascinating picture of a mandocello from the 1930s. It is of a string band in which the mandolin player also played the mandocello (behind gentleman sitting on keg).
The name of the group is Jimmie Wilson's Catfish String Band out of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and they had a show on KVOO.

And here's the promised sound files:
Wild Hog in the Woods (I make the mando cello sound like a wild hog)

Ben McCulloch (a Civil War song and I try to make the mandocello sound like an army on the march)

That's a very nice pair of instruments you have there. I own two mandocellos-- one homemade from a flea-market Kay guitar, and the other one an incredible Randy Wood-- and I use them for bluegrass, classical, and anything else that comes to mind. Recorded "High on a Mountain" and "Dives and Lazarus" with the 'cello on my latest CD, and am working my way (yes, slowly) through the Bach cello suites, a lifetime quest.
