It depends on what kind of music you are playing.
My pick is at least one of each, maybe two of each, and then maybe ....
I just don't think it is as simple as "A" or "F" these days. There are many options to account for and many other shapes and configurations.

For the past 19 years it's been F style; F9, then KM1000, and now the LM 700, the F9 was a plain Jane, the KM had nice appointments, but was quiet...then the LM 700 fit the bill...great tone with just enough bling.

Fs are pretty, but there is really no advantage except that they are pretty. The downside is that they generally cost twice as much as a comparable A. Of course, people are willing to pay a lot to have fancy inlay and binding and exotic woods too. But as for how they play and sound, my opinion is that there is no difference.
Some might disagree. I would ask them to put on a blindfold, have someone play 10 A models and 10 F models in random order, then identify which is which.
Bottom line, I have two of each. :)

I don't know about that. The scroll on F style mandolins makes for a convenient, built-in strap hook. That's an advantage! ![]()
