Hi,

I have three mandolins.  Each is very different from the other in construction.  They are as follows

  • a) A $40 Rogue A-style Mandolin

  • b) A <$600 Washburn F-style Mandolin

  • c) A <$500 Ovation Celebrity Mandolin

I played a C F G chord progression on each.  Can you tell which sound file goes with which Mandolin?

The sound files are labeled M1, M2, and M3.

The same pick and similar guage strings were used for each mandolin (medium).  The recording equipment was the same and the distance from the mike was kept constant.

I tried my best to apply similar technique to the strumming.

I will wait till there are a few responses before posting which Mandolin goes with which sound file.

While you are at it, let me know which tone you like the best.  Two of the mandolins are acoustic/electric, I will see if I can put some files on what they sound like amplified some time in the future.

M1

M2

M3

Thanks for the responses
The answers:
(drum roll please)

M1 - Ovation. I do find this to have more bottom end. This mandolin is also the highest mass of the three.
M2 - Rogue. The tone is more tinny than either of the other two, in my opinion. But at less than one tenth the cost of the other mandolins, it is good value.
M3 - Washburn. A bit richer and sweeter sounding than the Rogue.

Of the three, the Washburn and Ovation are the easiest to play, but not by much. The Washburn, because of its F style aesthetic is easily the prettiest of the three, at least in my opinion.
As far as cost, the Washburn and Ovation are really both the same as the Washburn came with a case and the Ovation did not. Please feel free to comment.

Bluehighway66 had it correct. Congrats.

THANKS Cryo! That was fun..It's always interesting when folks pull the next instrument out of the case, or open the box from another corner of the world, and how we wait for the magic from that first note, especially if we have never heard a particular brand or type.  I learned long ago from a bass player I admire, that the 'tone" is in the fingers, or it's in the pick, for us who have been blessed  enough to have discovered and play mandolin, however cheap or expensive. and the tone really isn't  in some exotic and expensive dream machine.  I played a Gibson once, and it didn't sound any better that the sweet little Kentucky my wife gave me, or my little bent top "A" that I got from Tom Flood. . Damn, we saved a lot of money!
