I am looking at purchasing a mandolin. I have been offered a "deal" on one called a Songbird but I can't find any info on it. I know that it is Korean made but that's it. Can anyone one provide me with any information on this particular brand. I know nothing about mandolins as I am a guitar person.
Thanks
For a first mandolin I would tend to trust established names such as Eastman or Kentucky. Look for an Eastman 305 or Kentucky KM150. Not exceptional mandolins but very good for the price. Great deals often get a problem off of someone else's plate and you may end up with some issues that prove it not to be such a good deal. My first mandolin had tuners that were almost impossible to turn. I could fix that today but back then it was a nearly insurmountable problem and I ended up buying another mandolin.
I agree with Bob, I’ve played both the Eastman and the Kentucky and both are a lot on mandolin for the money. I’m not familiar with the Songbird but if possible I’d have a mandolin playing friend check it out before buying. IMHO setup and construction are important with mandolin just to get a playable instrument.
