I am considering buying a Copley 5 string banjo for $400 . Its being sold by original buyer who's owned it for 15 years...he bought with intentions to learn but never did. Comes with original case . My question is:(1) Would $400 be a fair price ? (2) Did John Copley build these banjos or did he assemble them with imported parts ? There seems to be a strong following by some in the Tennessee area regarding John Copley
Depends on how the banjo was made whether it's worth that or not. If it's an entry level banjo with no tone ring, $400 is probably more than it's worth. If it has a tone ring and decent tuners, then that price might be fair. Without seeing pictures of the banjo and more information, it's almost impossible to give you an educated guess on its' worth.
You might want to ask on the Banjohangout as there are several excellent luthiers who could tell you more about the banjo than I can.
