The State Departments description of violence in Mexico could apply to Richmond, California. Mexico is a big place and the people warm and friendly and extremely polite. Like anyplace there are some places you should avoid. There are many more places in Mexico where those problems aren't happening. It is true, there is a really violent war going on between drug cartels and between the cartels and the Government over who is going to control the US drug market and particularly the areas where these drugs are produced. I've been in areas of Mexico where the drug gangs are building schools and clinics that the government had never thought to provide. Mexican version of the Robin hood story.......But more to the point, I meant--- rather than laying around the house and if peeling potatoes at In-N-Out doesn't do much for you and College is out then maybe a person could travel. How about Australia? (Watch out for them big Goannas!) I just found out that if you are between 18 and 30 it is not difficult to get a thing called a "Working Holiday" visa to Australia --good for a year and possibly renewable. This is kind of a new thing now available to US citizens, it used to be you could do that only if you were a Commonwealth member. These kids need to get it that there are so many things to do and while they have the energy and nothing tying them why not go try stuff. Short of getting caught in the crossfire of a revolution what else do they have to worry about?

Sorry, I dropped a post then went away for a while. Thanks for the comments. She's certainly very intelligent, but unmotivated to do much of anything. I certainly like the idea of charging her rent, unfortunately she has no job and neither my x-wife or I can get her to go out and find one. Telling her that we will kick her out is a non-starter because she knows that we won’t make her live on the streets. Surprisingly enough her Grandmother has suggested just that. As far as being in a band is concerned, she was a GREAT flute player, won many competitions and loved marching band in high school. I’ve tried my darndest to get her to join her college band but she can’t seem to get herself to actually look into it. At this point she still has a GREAT scholarship that pretty much pays for her schooling, but I honestly don’t see her maintaining the necessary grades to keep it next year. ……………. Creatively she is into writing, she writes on several fan fiction sites, the problem is I can’t convince her that she needs to turn that interest into a money making situation. She doesn’t seem to understand that by doing fan fiction she’s giving away her talents for free. Also, unfortunately she seems to truly believe that the protest Wallstreet movement is correct in their beliefs and for some unknown reason seems to believe that society owes her a living, just for living I guess. There is a big part of me that says, “Let her be, she will engage sooner or later, when she does nothing will stop her.” But I’m conservative in my views and this waiting for her to settles is driving me nuts……. I keep telling her, “I don’t care what you do, as long as you do SOMETHING.” So far I’m a horrible father for saying that though.

She's writing? That is one of those things that don't look like doing anything but actually is doing something--ah--sort of like playing music. One of the really great things about getting into the arts is that you probably won't make a living, which fortunately there are enough talented people that will survive on Ramon noodles and live in basements and such for as long as it takes or until 40,whichever come first, hoping for a break or at least recognition.
. She's right ya know- about the Occupy people. She's wrong in that anyone owes her anything but Wallstreet owes something to society.

I shouldn't have gone there with the Wall Street mention, I can see both sides of that arguement and lets leave it at that.

She does write and she writes well, it certainly can be considered a learning process. The thing is it's totally taken over her life. Kind of like an addiction, she lives for it and nothing else. At 3am shes at it, at 1 am she's at it, the sun comes up and she sleeps, then she's at it again. Sitting in bedbathed in the blue glow from her computer. Life is passing her by and there seems to be nothing I can do to bring her back to the real world. Ttime will tell, it's quite possible that something will kick her into gear

Get her to read Hemingway---Get chased by a bull, write about it, get chased by a Lion, write about it, get chased by a Spaniard, write about it, get chased by a fish...you get the idea...the happiness of pursuit....

Agreed on Hemingway.  Two of his best are two of his shortest:  "A Clean Well-Lighted Place"  and "A Day's Wait."  You can't write those without some years on you.

Yo! Sorry everyone been away for a while. But I'm back!

Wanted to throw this out there. My Mandolin just all of a sudden developed a tail piece buzz! Gawd it sounds terrible. I've been playing it for almost 2 years and one day it just started???!!! Anyone know what could have caused this and more importantly, WHAT DO I DO ABOUT IT?? I've got several big shows coming up this Spring and Summer and I need to fix this FAST!

Does it buzz with the cover off? A piece of felt or leather between the cover and the strings maybe. Loose screws anywhere?

Mmm, never thought about possibility of loose screws, however, it does buzz with the cover OFF, which makes me worried for some reason. Plus the fact that it just suddenly started after almost 2 years??? Well, I'm gonna change strangs tonight and give it a good cleanning and thurough going over. Maybe that will help or maybe I can find out what's going on. I Love this Mando, but its not like it was super expensive or anything. However, I would like to figure this out and fix it. Anyway, I'll let Y'all know what happens..

Try the felt under the cover? Something else? Strap peg? What we're looking for is that it's something external. Sound can be weird, like you hear it at the tail piece and discover that you have a loose gear in a tuning machine. How about a high fret? If you play individual strings does it go away if you fret high up the neck? How about old or worn out strings? Sometimes the winding can break but the core doesn't ,that can cause a buzz. A loose brace can cause a buzz or a rattle but we don't want it to be that. Nut or bridge if a slot is damaged.
