I know this is probably stupid, but I had to do it. I learned the little Mandolin lick the guy plays on the GEICO commercials.

Switching to GEICO sure makes a lot of people happy.

How happy?

Happier than a mandolin picker with a new set of strings...

What's wrong with that?  I took the time to learn this little tune.  Rauhouse is great.  Along with scales and whatnot, this is part of my warm up now.

Andy Griffith Theme and Woody Wood Pecker Song are a couple of my favorites.

Working on the break in the Steeldrivers'  "Can You Run."  Not easy, but not as hard as I feared.

Started pickin' Big Rock Candy Mountain. In the process of learning Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine, but I'm stuck on the A part since that's all I'm playing on fiddle right now.

Oh, and my parents called me to say they found a banjo in some store back home. Seemed real interested to know if I was interested. I said yes, of course...but I need details on this banjo. I love how my parents are supporting my banjo love.

Mando and fiddle and banjo!  Shiny!  Nothing wrong with that 5-string monster (or the 4-string tenor banjo for that matter...)

I hope it's a 5 string. They're the bad-a** banjo in my opinion.

3556

And I'm just stoked they thought of me when they saw it. I've been talking about wanting a banjo for a couple weeks and, boom, they find one.

3557

Now I've been talking about wanting a pony for 28 years...still waiting on that one.

Here at the Bar and Grill, you get your drink and your pony.

Happy picking.

Ah, Rolling Rock. Doesn't quite satisfy like PBR, but the bottle cap does add a touch of fancy.

3560

And looks like I'm going to get me a banjo. Sorry mando folks, I can't help myself...can no longer resist the temptation...

I know. But it could be worse. Haha. And then I have my mandolin and fiddle to save me and make me somewhat respectable.

Having a banjo makes your collection more well-rounded (pun intended).  I think the baseline for respectability comes from being able to count, which I oft forget to do...

Speaking of counting...

I had my mandolin with me at a jam session Sunday. One of the gents (one of the few audience members we get) looked at me and says, "What is that? Is that a mandolin?" I replied in the affirmative. The guy looks seriously puzzled and then says, "Well, I've never seen one with 8 strings before."

That reminds me of the story I heard Ricky Skaggs tell once at a show.  At a previous show, a man from that audience insisted that Skaggs had played a mean banjo.  Skaggs tried to correct him politely, as he had played only the mando that night, but the man insisted that Skaggs had played the banjo.  After a while, Skaggs said he just let it go.  You can't teach some folk.

So I was talking to my niece (she's 4) and she says to me, "Auntie, I like banjos. And mandolins. And violins. I really like banjos auntie." Well rounded girl there.

Well done, auntie.  Teach her well.
