Hey y'all Im new here and fairly new to mandolins. Does anybody own a mastercraft mandolin? I'm curious because I can't find any info about them. I currently own a kentucky km 171 as well as a kentucky km 505, I also have an old stella that pretty much just hangs on a wall. I guess Im just curious about these mastercrafts because they seem like a good bargain and I'd love to have an f style to play on. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The Mastercraft mandolins I have seen are real junk.  They're cheap Asian-made instruments and are near the bottom of the quality scale.  Both Kentucky's that you currently have are better mandolins, especially the KM 505.  The KM 505 is actually one of the best entry-level mandolins available.  I've heard a couple and they both sounded very nice.  Don't be fooled into thinking that because it's a F style, that it's better.  The KM 505 will out preform many cheap F style mandolins, even some not-so-cheap ones.

I really wonder about this forum.  I've been away for a while and when I saw this post, I couldn't believe nobody responded in THREE days.  And people wonder why this site is so dead all of the time!!!

'cause maybe nobody knew anything about Mastercraft mandolins? I for one know almost nothing about Asian import mandolins, never had one and don't need or want one. ( That's a lie actually, I bought one of those Vietnam fergazy inlay things once on a lark and it would make a terrific wall hanger except I don't hang instruments on my walls,I have more instruments than walls so it's buried in a closet) I've heard reports about certain ones and have played a few Kentucky mandolins and thought that they seemed a good deal for the money whenever I did. A couple of KM 1000's that were really, really good! I noodled around on Jethro Burn's Washburn once many years ago and did take note that it was light years better than the Washburns with his name on them that I have stumbled upon since. Me thinks his was specially built and not the same as the production models.
But your correct, it's dead slow here, and a little slow at the Cafe right now --it's Summer-- who's hanging around their computers? I would suggest however if this doesn't pick up by the time the nights get long and cold again Mando Hangout will probably go up in smoke! I think we need to start some discussions that would be totally shut down on the Cafe and as members here we should insist that they be allowed to stay up ----after all do we really want to talk about strings and picks or what is the best cheap crummy mandolin? I'm not that interested in talking about "fakes" that are found on ebay or most any of the subjects that have been beat to death on the Cafe --who needs them, again and again and again?
We could:
Start a discussion about-------
ecology and instrument production (Should cheap crummy Asian mandolin manufacturers be allowed to get their grubby capitalist- commie hands on figured maple ? What about spruce?
redneck politics as related to bluegrass. (Last form of music left for white folks?)
no holds barred critics of popular mandolin players -(Lou Reid can sing and play but his lyrics send me up the wall!  "Amanda Lynn" --OH PLEASE!)
answer the question "Are vintage instruments a Jewish conspiracy?.
The point is that this site needs to be something different than the Mandolin Cafe because, well, there is a Mandolin Cafe. Response to any of the above tongue in cheek subjects are truly welcome.

Here's one ---Which would be your choice for President? One that wears "magic" underwear or one that awards Sierra Hull with a "Presidential Scholarship"?

Thanks Ben, I knew I could count on you to chime in.  And I'm not criticizing, I mean that in a good way.  I've been on the Cafe for a couple of years now, and while I join in on many discussions (hopefully, ones I know something about), I have only started a handful of threads.  Usually, when I have a question in which I'm  looking for some expert advice.  I agree that part of the problem is that topics are beat to death already on MC and often there's not much new to talk about.  However, even when there is a topic such as this thread, NO ONE reply's for days.  I've seen this countless times.  Sometimes I have to question whether or not there's room for two mandolin forums.  As much as I'd like to see this work out for the Hangout, in the limited time I have with my computer, I always go to the Cafe first.  The Classifieds are 10 times better.  It has a nice selection of MP3's to listen to.  The interviews are usually great, and the site is more user-friendly, IMO.  Also the instrument reviews on the Hangout are terrible.  The bottom line is this.  I look at a average day's posts on the Hangout and it might be sometimes 8 or 10 new posts.  The Cafe often has a couple of hundred.  I see a new classified ad in the Hangout every few days where the Cafe has 25 or 30 per day.  It's only natural where the mandolinists are going to go.

As far as this particular thread is concerned, I agree that the really cheap Asian mandolins are mostly not even worth discussing.  That's why when someone asks about the merits of a lousy mandolin, people should be quick to jump in and steer them clear of such junk.  I realize that many people have limited budgets, but there are better options than the cheapest junk.  It's up to the more experienced players to help people with the better choices.  The only reason these crappy mandolins continue to be made is because people buy them.

Well, that's a "no-brainer" for me.  I only hope that more voters hear about the magic underwear.  Maybe then they'll realize what they're dealing with.

BTW, I didn't know about the Presidential Scholarship for Sierra.  That's awesome.

This site will not compete with Mandolin Cafe nor should it try. It's been around a long time and has many real experts as regulars. You get people like Danny Roberts discussing Danny Roberts signed Gibsons, Adam Steffi, or Lynn Dudenbostle chiming in on a discussion from time to time. People that know every nuance about vintage instruments, particularly Gibson mandolins and if you have a question about one it will be dissected down to the braces and you will end up knowing everything about it. The site is conservative though and many hot contested subjects get shut down just about the time I think it's getting good.
I agree, someone comes on and asks a question such as the question that started this thread (which we have now hijacked) answer it if you know. Or expand it and talk about the pros and cons of Chinese garbage instruments. They aren't all garbage and they're getting better at it but who is buying the crap?

Thanks for your input TI user, I'll just save my money untill I can afford something worthwhile. I really do love both my kentuckys especially my km 505, I just always wanted an f-style, but I'd rather have a few good instruments than a bunch of crappy ones.

And I do apologise if I brought up a topic that has already been beat to death and dosent deserve or merit a response, its just that I couldnt find any info anywhere about these instruments. It seemed strange that the only review or opinion about them was on the website where they are sold. I've played guitar for years and have watched the quality of respectable companies go down hill as they try to compete with the asian markets, many taylors and martins are now made in mexico and to me frankly they arent the same. I didnt mean to bring up a topic that has already been beaten to death, I was just curious. As I've already said I'll just save what I have and tuck away more untill I can buy an f-style that I could actually use and sounds good and would be worth keeping.
