As a complete mando novice, I need some advice about nuts. (That cracks me up!)  I am planning to order a mandolin from a really nice builder, and I'd like your thoughts on wide nuts vs standard.  Generally, do folks with fatter fingers prefer wide nuts, and if not, who does?  Can you change to a wide nut at any time, or is the neck actually wider on wide nut mandolins?

Thanks in advance!

The neck is slightly wider.  The difference is not much but most will tell you it does make a difference.  I played and owned many mandolins before I was even aware that builders made them with different widths.  My Breedlove has a 1-3/16" nut where standard is 1-1/8".  It is not much of a difference but I do feel it.  However, Breedlove also spaces the strings wider at the bridge as well.  I don't know if others do that, but I feel that is what makes mine play easier.  I really feel that most players can get used to which ever with they're presented with.  I feel it makes forming 4 finger chords easier because your fingers are not so cramped, but like I said, I played standard width mandolins for 25 years before that and had no problem.

I love talking about nuts! Seriously, when my friend and I start talking about "nut width" on our guitars and mandolins, his wife cracks up every time!!

I'm a big guy, with big fingers, and much prefer wide nuts.

I would THINK (assumption here) that you would be MORE likely to get a regular width and wish you would have gotten a wider one, than get a wider one and wish it were smaller.

You cannot change from a small to a large if you feel like it - fretboard has to be built that way. I switched from small to wider and will never go back.

Only way to know for sure is to play both and see which one you like best, if at all possible.
